This is my first ever blog…so where to begin? Perhaps the story of our journey!
It was Spring 2016, my husband (Steve) and I had just made a huge life changing decision….
Steve was a full-time farmer, with no work-life balance, (I wasn’t even sure he knew we had two children!). So in an effort to slow things down a little, take better care of himself (Steve had been a type 1 diabetic since childhood) and finally enjoy the fruits of all his hard work – we decided to pack up farming.
‘Retirement’ suited him for all of five minutes, his enterprising, motivated and hardworking character could not be rested, he needed a new challenge (but ideally one that meant he wasn’t working evenings and weekends!)
So back into the workshop he went, armed with his new workshop ‘toy’ (a plasma cutter) he had every intention to make and sell farm equipment, instead he emerged from the shed with a DINOSAUR!
Family and friends all loved it and surprisingly loved the rusty colour as much as we did, and so began the questions “what else can you cut?”, “can you make something for me?”, and finally “you should turn this into a business!”.
Rusty Rooster was born
We experimented with rusting new metal, we loved the rusty patina we achieved, the warm hues, the natural and unique markings.
Inspired by the Fenland Countryside and all things farming, we started to dream up more and more designs…..
We make a great team – Steve is really hands on and is responsible for cutting, welding, rusting and all things requiring manual labour. I’m the creative one, coming up with new designs, managing the online side of things and of course getting my hands dirty when needed!
Best all of this business venture is something that we can do together, the children are also getting involved, so it really is a family business, finally we have gotten the work-life balance in check!
I’m going to leave you with a few pic’s of Steve hard at work, bye for now x
